Intricately patterned wooden flooring is very much on trend, and for excellent reasons. In addition to the wonderful benefits always associated with wood, it provides you with the tools to design something quite unique. It is also the perfect foil to any design scheme - both contemporary and traditional, and, thanks to twenty-first-century wood technology like pre-finished and pre-assembled, it is now relatively quick and easy to install.
As befits the UK's most pro-active wood flooring company, we are delighted to offer an outstandingly eclectic and inspirational collection of quality products in order to incite your imagination.
Herringbone is a particularly popular pattern, but there are actually a great many different designs that may be achieved with these same rectangular blocks. For example, a standard single herringbone pattern appears quite different depending on whether you lay it parallel to the boundary of the room (square) or rotate the entire pattern by 45° (diagonal). And the size of the block chosen has a significant effect too: traditional blocks are relatively small, around 70mm wide, so using a larger block has a more contemporary feel.
You may use the same blocks to lay a double herringbone, a brick pattern, sometimes known as stretcher or running bond, and the single, double or boxed basket weave. All of these can be laid square or diagonally, and all may be personalised even further by using more than one shade of block. Do note, however, that some patterns require the length of the block to be a specific multiple of the width.
At Havwoods we offer both solid and engineered wood blocks in a variety of sizes. Most of our herringbone blocks are supplied either with a groove on three sides and tongue on one, or with two sides groove, two sides tongue; those marked ‘handed’ are supplied as left- and right-handed and will be supplied in the correct ratio. But if you need the fastest possible installation, look out for our interlocking, click system herringbone blocks.
The herringbone and chevron patterns are similar enough to sometimes cause confusion, but the difference is really simple: a chevron pattern is one of continuous zigzags resulting in a strong linear design, whereas the herringbone pattern is a broken zigzag, just like the bone of a fish.
At Havwoods, our chevron blocks are supplied pre-cut with mitred ends; many are pre-finished and all are supplied either with a groove on three sides and tongue on one, or with two sides groove, two sides tongue. But for the quickest, easiest chevron pattern ever, we also stock a number of pre-finished, pre-assembled "chevron panels" which make installing this intricate flooring as easy as laying a plank.
Mosaic wood patterns are often associated with intricate inlay work, but the classic mosaic parquet is the five-finger pattern available from Havwoods in solid European oak and supplied sanded ready for staining on site.
Our mansion weave, diamond and stretched hexagon engineered wood blocks bring mosaic right into the 21st Century and take intricate flooring to a new dimension - think of them as fine art for your floors. All three designs are available in natural, white or grey UV oiled finishes, enabling you to emphasise an optical pattern or three-dimensional effect and create your own, totally unique floor.
Versailles and other patterned panels
The Versailles pattern is a design classic, but producing it from individual blocks requires a highly skilled installer and is very time-consuming. So, at Havwoods, we supply all of our Versailles pattern products in pre-assembled, pre-finished engineered panels, which makes achieving this stand-out floor exceptionally easy.
These patterned panels are so popular that we have added a whole host of different designs to the collection. All are milled from superior quality oak and feature a number of distressing techniques to create an aged appearance to the timber. Please note, however, that these are not stock items so do allow time for a special order to be processed.
Given the size of these panels, it is obviously not possible to send out samples. All may be viewed in our London showrooms.
The Italian Collection
More chevron and herringbone blocks and small planks that are perfect for creating decorative wood floors can be found in our Italian Collection. Slightly smaller and thinner than our standard parquet, this collection has been inspired by the intricate flooring so often found in southern Europe. All three shapes are available in each shade, making them idea for using together to create unique designs. And their slimmer depth also makes them particularly suitable for integrating with tiles in other materials like porcelain, ceramic or glass.
