PurePanel Duo is the perfect panel for wall cladding or carpentry since it can be used just like a laminated panel but offers all the visual benefits of a real wood surface. The outer face uses a veneer cut from the finest European oak logs and laid up in a mix-match technique that combines several traditional matching processes in order to achieve the most pleasing aesthetic, as well as to ensure maximum consistency in colour and quality. This is bonded to an MDF core, sandwiched on the inner face by a reconstituted veneer of the same species and finished on both faces with a water based stain. Finally a matt lacquer ensures a really durable finish. All of our PurePanel Duo products are FSC® Certified.

Please note that any substrate must have a suitable load-bearing capacity since these panels weigh in excess of 40 kg each.

A phenolic backed veneer sheet and matching edge trim are also available in this shade. Please note, PurePanels should not be used as high-usage horizontal work surfaces like table tops or kitchen counters.

This product is usually available from stock. See more PurePanel Duo products, our Pure Veneer panels, or view our entire Vertical Collection.

What is a veneer?

This product is a wood veneer. A veneer is essentially a very thin slice taken from a slab of timber; it is normally less than 3mm thick. Usually wood veneer is bonded to a core panel of less expensive wood or fibre broad in order to produce a solid panel that is then worked into the requisite item, although veneers are also available “ paper backed” or “raw” (with no backing whatsoever).

Only the finest logs are used to produce veneers and it is an art form that almost certainly pre-dates the ancient Egyptians. Different slicing methods give a distinctly different appearance to the grain, and the slices are then “laid up”, which means that they are joined together to form a larger piece. It is the art of slicing and matching that dictates the beauty of the finished veneer.

Like engineered wood, wood veneer boards are highly stable: the process of bonding the veneer to the base layer making it virtually impossible for the board to swell or shrink. Like engineered wood, a veneer board will be supplied pre-finished, making it easier to judge how your project will look when it is finished as well as ensuring a quick and easy installation. And, as with engineered wood, opting for wood veneer products is an ecologically sound choice since it uses less of the slow-growing hardwood timbers we love so much.

Don’t confuse a veneer with a laminate: a veneer uses real wood whereas a laminate uses a photographic process to replicate the appearance of wood.

What is the species?

This product is milled in Europe from European oak. European oak is actually a generic name for two different species, both of which are classified as white oak and exhibit essentially the same characteristics. Also know by their country of origin, e.g. English oak, French oak, et cetera, they have a warm golden, honey colour, slightly richer and less pink-toned than American Oak and with more even colouring. They also have a distinctive wavy grain pattern with scatterings of pips and burr and are particularly suited to the fuming process, ensuring more consistent results.

In general, European mills utilise a technique known as live sawing. This results in a mixture of plain, quarter and rift sawn cuts all in one wide plank of wood. Capturing all parts of the wood in one cut like this gives the floor a unique and notably beautiful appearance, and because at least a third of the cut is quarter sawn, the planks themselves are particularly stable.

What is FSC® Certification?

If a product is labelled as being “FSC® Certified" it means that the both timber itself and the manufacturing process including the entire chain of supply meet the requirements of the Forest Stewardship Council.

The Forest Stewardship Council is an international, non-profit organisation whose mission is to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests. This includes addressing issues such as illegal logging, deforestation and global warming, with positive outcomes on economic development, environmental conservation, poverty alleviation and social and political empowerment.
