The use of smaller wooden battens or blocks to create intricate flooring patterns goes back hundreds of years and is currently undergoing a huge revival; nowadays designers are mixing colours, creating their own patterns, and even introducing other textures with tiles of ceramic, glass, or even rubber. The Versailles pattern was created to help transform a humble hunting lodge into the famous Chateau de Versailles for Louis XVI.

Havwoods herringbone, chevron and Versailles pattern blocks originate from quite a number of different mills but, to make your search easier, we have brought most of them together under one collection. Here you will find both solid and engineered products, reclaimed, replica reclaimed and painted blocks, as well as unfinished ones for completion on site: all are of excellent quality, as you would expect, and more detailed construction information can be found in the introduction to the ‘Design from Havwoods products’ section.

In recent decades, just as modern finishing techniques have dramatically reduced the need to use exotic timbers to achieve certain shades and textures, modern lacquers and oils have ensured a level of durability which allows them to be specified even in high footfall locations.
Durability limitations are due, not to technology, but to the cellular nature of wood itself. Indeed, wood floors coated with aluminium oxide lacquers were found to achieve quite amazing abrasion resistance in laboratory conditions, but proved unsuitable for practical use – the lacquer proved to be harder and more inflexible than the wood underneath which resulted in a surface with a tendency to shatter on impact or go white when scratched. Our Fusion range provides a solution.
Fusion is produced by recreating our favourite floors on perfectly prepared High Density Fibre Planks. These engineered wood planks are considerably harder than hardwood, are totally consistent in their level of hardness, and, unlike wood in it’s natural state, are not cellular in nature. This means that they will not compress on impact and so can be successfully finished with the very latest aluminium oxide technology. The result is a beautiful, warm, matt lacquered 14mm bevelled plank which is installed as a floating floor, exhibits excellent acoustic and slip-resistant properties, and is virtually impossible to accidentally scratch, mark or dent. It may be fitted over underfloor heating and is backed by an exceptional 25-year residential, 15-year commercial warranty.

Gold Leaf is Havwoods’ own collection of solid wood products and now includes some pre-finished as well as unfinished products.

Gold Leaf was formed originally to provide good quality, unfinished solid hardwood chevrons and parquet blocks. These were sourced from a mill working primarily in European oak and renowned for their superior quality and the accuracy of their machining – they actually work to a tolerance of just 0.2mm which is on a par with that of many pre-finished manufacturers.

Now the range has been extended substantially. In addition to a wide range of 15mm and 20mm oak blocks, including those with the 4:1 proportions required to lay in double herringbone, basket weave or tumbling dice patterns, it now includes solid hardwood mosaic and end-grain block panels, parquet battens in other hardwood species, and a number of European oak planks in a variety of widths and grades. The products are sourced from a variety of mills with one thing in common: all can be relied upon to produce an excellent quality floor which requires minimal on-site sanding and are produced to the same exacting standards which set the bar for the initial Gold Leaf range.

The Havwoods’ Hand Grade collection redefines the spectacular. It essentially reinvents oak flooring by offering the most magnificent planks up to 4m long and almost 1/2m wide in a choice of eight sensational shades. Three of these are wholly contemporary, whilst the remainder display the unique characteristics of a time-worn floor.

All Hand Grade products are supplied as pre-finished engineered boards, their enormous size enabled by superior stability provided by a triple layered construction with a base and lamella of European oak and core of WBP birch ply. They are finished with Hardwax Oil and the entire collection may be fitted over underfloor heating.

This is wood to reawaken your delight in wood flooring; to revise your preconceptions and revitalise your vision. We call it wood flooring reimagined.

With Havwoods Bespoke you too can turn your ideas into a realistic proposition, simply call +44(0)1524 737000 or email bespokefloors@havwoods.co.uk

Havwoods Bespoke is a concept, not a collection. It’s your concept delivered in a way which is viable in a commercial situation.

Take the unique diamond patterned floor in solid oak specified for One Tower Bridge. To achieve this floor conventionally would be massively labour intensive, involving laying a plywood subfloor, cutting and gluing down individual small pieces, allowing it to settle for a week, then clearing the site to sand the floor and apply several coats of lacquer. The Havwoods Bespoke solution was to produce the panels off site, delivering essentially a pre-finished panel in an engineered construction; significantly quicker, far more practical on a busy site, and ensuring an excellent lacquered finish since it was applied in a controlled factory environment.

You can also see the work of Havwoods Bespoke on our gallery in both the squared parquet design specified for Berkeley Homes’ prestigious Ebury Square development, and in the complex geometrical pattern designed for the new Harvey Nichols store in Birmingham. In both instances site disruption was out of the question and a pre-finished solution was devised and delivered on time and on budget.

USEFUL INFORMATION

Many of Havwoods products are suitable for use on floors, walls and ceilings. Ask for details.

Henley was originally devised as a collection suited to the needs of the hospitality industry, the criteria being fashion forward with interesting finishes which are still tough enough to withstand heavy footfall (we always personally test each and every one). The range is the ultimate designer’s tool: a pre-finished engineered collection from a number of different mills, all of which combine wonderful aesthetics with practicality, durability and structural integrity.

Now Henley is one of the three ranges to consider (the others being Relik and the Hand Grade collection) if you specifically want a pre-finished plank with texture. It is a quality, high performance engineered board, usually 19 or 20mm thick, with a hardwood surface layer which account for around 25% or more of the overall depth. It features a traditional tongue and groove profile but sawing, brushing, burning and planing techniques add character and tremendous visual interest without going to the extent of a reclaimed board.

Most Henley planks feature an oiled finish and are suitable for use over underfloor heating. And, as per the original definition, they remain particularly suitable for applications where damage from heels and/or pets are more noticeable on a smooth surface board.

Junckers is a very well known and well respected Danish producer and Havwoods are one of their largest UK stockists, concentrating solely on their pre-finished solid hardwood planks. All feature Junckers’ own unique clip fixing system and boards over 20mm thick can also be nailed down to the joists to form a structural floor. These are also the only solid wood floors which we at Havwoods are prepared to supply for fitting over underfloor heating and Junckers have full technical data sheets to ensure a successful installation (please ask for details). Almost without exception, all planks are available in a choice of finishes: oiled, or with ultra-matt or silk-matt lacquers.

Fleming Juncker had a deep and specific interest in beech timber and, whilst it is almost 40 years since the company was under his management, beech remains a key timber in both their commercial and residential product offering and in their sports and dance floors for which the brand remains revered. Junckers sports floors are the choice of athletes and are BREEAM A+ rated and certified to BSEN 14904 parts A3 and A4.

Havwoods is the largest stockist of Junckers flooring in the UK and it is unlikely that you will find any Junckers product cheaper elsewhere. Call +44(0)1524 737000 to discuss your Junckers flooring requirements.

PAR-KY

Par-ky Wood Flooring from Havwoods

Our publications are available as printed publications, on-line digital interactive applications, or pdfs. Click here to request yours.

Par-ky is a wood veneer plank. This means that a thin layer of real wood is bonded to an HDF (High Density Fibre) core.

HDF is compressed wood. It is considerably harder than hardwood, is totally consistent in its degree of hardness, and, unlike wood in its natural state, is not cellular in nature. This means that it will not compress on impact and is thus less likely to indent. It also means that it can be finished with an extremely hard lacquer without fear of it shattering.

Havwoods’ Par-ky planks are available in two thickness, one of which incorporates a layer of cork for extra acoustic and thermal insulation. They offer excellent value, making a real wood floor an option on even the tightest of budgets. Furthermore, all Havwoods’ Par-ky planks utilise prime grade wood, meaning that the surface is virtually free of knots and other natural characteristics and show very little colour variation. This makes them particularly suitable for those who prefer a very clean-looking floor.

These pre-finished, FSC® certified, 14mm engineered planks utilize a click system and triple layered construction involving two layers of softwood with a European oak lamella. From a well-established European mill with a huge capacity and the resources to maintain in-house control of all aspects from the forest right through to the packing room floor, this, together with highly sophisticated quality control programmes, ensures consistent deliveries of excellent quality and makes the range perfect for the largest of projects. In addition to the standard 180mm width boards there is also a small collection of 130mm wide planks, whilst PurePlank Wide provides a more impressive, 207mm board with a 3.5mm lamella  which is more durable for commercial applications.

PurePlank offers lacquered, oiled and UV oiled finishes within the range, the lacquered planks being particularly tough with seven layers of UV-cured acrylic. We recommend a further coat of finish after installation for oiled boards (UV oiled boards do not need this). All may be fitted over underfloor heating (please ask for details before specifying).

Relik embraces Havwoods’ rapidly expanding collection of reclaimed timbers under one brand. Sourced from a variety of specialist mills, it includes both reproduction and genuine reclaimed planks (reclaimed chevron and herringbone blocks are included in our Design collection).

Aged timber is visually inspiring and frequently comes with a fascinating history too. The unpainted solid oak products, for example, hail from the Maramures region of Transylvania, a region with a rich tradition of building in wood and where massive load-bearing timbers from vintage barns and houses are crafted into planks and blocks with the regular dimensions. The painted pine comes from North America, and still wears the remnants of the original paintwork from centuries old barns and farmhouses left empty in the exodus to the cities. All are planed and profiled and sanded using 21st century production techniques to produce boards which are straight, level and of a consistent thickness.

But the bulk of the Havwoods’ Relik range is made up of pre-finished engineered products. Engineering makes better use of the finite resources of timber which is reclaimed from barns, quays, docks, etc, and results in commercially viable, consistently sized boards which are easy to fit and so stable they may even be used over underfloor heating. And if you want something which looks the part yet is ultra tough, the engineered reproduction reclaimed ’weathered’ planks provide the optimum solution, since the processes involved in creating this texturing actually strips out the soft tissues between the grain.

JUNCKERS SPORTS FLOORS

Solid hardwood is the athletes’ preference for sports flooring since it provides area elasticity. At Havwoods we stock Junckers 22mm solid beech Sylvasport 2-strip planks in both Premium and Club grades. These beech staves undergo a unique press-drying process which results in exceptional strength and stability, and the two rows are assembled with a carefully machined double dovetail joint. This allows each stave to move individually and so creates a floor which is free from tension.

Having installed more than 20 million square metres of sports flooring all around the world, Junckers can fairly claim superior expertise. Sports flooring is a specialised sector of the industry, and one in which this company has been operating for over 75 years. Their knowledge is considered so extensive that they are represented on the committee responsible for setting recognised European sports flooring standards.

Sports floors are tested for five key areas of performance:

SHOCK ABSORPTION

Understandably, a shock-absorbing flooring minimises the risk of injuries. Test results display the percentage of shock energy absorbed by the floor when, for example, landing after a jump.

FRICTION

Correct friction is important when ball players move rapidly on the floor and the ideal friction number is between 80 and 110. A friction number less than 80 makes the floor too smooth. A friction number above 110 makes the floor too rough.

VERTICAL DEFORMATION

Understandably, a shock-absorbing flooring minimises the risk of injuries. Test results display the percentage of shock energy absorbed by the floor when, for example, landing after a jump.

ROLLING LOAD

The floor’s ability to withstand rolling loads is important in circumstances where items such as carts and retractable seating are to be utilised. Test results display whether or not the floor can withstand a rolling load of 1,500 N (approx. 150 kgs).

BALL BOUNCE

Correct ball-bounce increases the ball control and the speed of the game. The test results display the rebound achieved by the floor as a percentage of the rebound measured on a concrete floor

Junckers floors are fatigue tested to simulate 25-years of normal usage. They provide low life-cycle costs and are suitable for use over underfloor heating. Like all Junckers 22mm planks their sports floors are BREEAM A+ rated and they are also certified to BSEN 14904 parts A3 and A4

Intricate flooring patterns using narrow planks and blocks, are a long-time feature of Italian design and are increasingly featuring in contemporary interiors internationally. In the most adventurous designs they are being mixed with tiles of earthenware, stoneware, ceramic, stone, and even rubber or glass for a truly unique, stand-out look. A narrower, thinner timber product provides more flexibility for these patterns, so this collection of glue-down engineered tongue and groove planks, herringbone and chevron blocks is no more than 11mm thick

Featuring a 4mm wear layer of the finest European oak, slow grown in cold northern forests for a dense, even grain, this range is milled in probably the most sophisticated and highly automated facility we have encountered, ensuring a quite remarkable consistency. Only select grade timbers are chosen, and these are bonded to layers of quality spruce or birch ply to form a strong and stable board which is FSC® certified.

The Italian Collection boards feature techniques which include brushing to open the grain and emphasise its natural characteristics, fuming and thermo treatments which darken it, and all are completed in-house. We stock three sizes, especially selected for producing the complex designs which are becoming such a strong feature of fashion-forward interiors. We also now stock a couple of 15mm thick products (a plank and a herringbone block) from the same mill: these were originally ordered especially for use in Southbank Tower.

TRAPA

Trapa Wood Flooring from Austria

Call +44(0)1524 737000 for your copy of our Trapa Wood Flooring brochure, or download a pdf here.

This Austrian range is genuinely the creme de la creme of engineered timber flooring, so stable that it will withstand temperatures up to 60°C, requires no expansion gaps for stretches of up to 40m, and may even be fitted in a sauna!

An exclusive mill working in Italian chestnut, elm, larch, fir, French oak, American and European walnut, Trapa boards are mainly of a symmetrical, triple layered construction with a 4mm wear layer and quarter sawn inner core. Materials are always sourced from the same region to ensure consistency of tannin, colour, etc, and the wood is both air dried and then kiln dried before being cut. This is a costly and time-consuming process and Trapa is the only mill in the world who produce wood flooring in this way, but the result is exceptional. Crystallising natural oils, lye, heat & pressure are used to generate a variety of light-stable colour shades out of each wood species, the planks are sanded with an ultra-fine grit paper, saturated with oil and buffed with the grain instead of using a circular motion. The result is an exceptionally flat, exceptionally stable, exceptionally fine board with PEFC™ certification, suitable for use over underfloor heating and ideal for high footfall areas, and available in several interchangeable dimensions right up to gigantic planks measuring 8m long and over 400mm wide.

The Trapa products shown on our website are held in stock and we are delighted to announce that we have worked with the mill to offer them at even more attractive prices. The remainder of the 160-strong range is available to order, with a four-week lead time and only from Havwoods. Please note: Trapa grades do not correspond with our Havwoods standard grading and that the warranty is invalid if their own glue, trowel and maintenance kits are not used (never use micro-fibre materials).

The Trekker range comprises of decking and cladding boards suitable for both external and internal use. Passionate as we are about wood we are not convinced of its suitability for use as a decking product. Exposed to the elements timber can rot, warp, splinter and become highly slippery in the wet due to the growth of algae, but this attractive wood grain textured composite is made from wood and recycled plastic and so is far less susceptible. It is easy to install using fixing clips and even easier to maintain, requiring nothing more than an occasional wash with plain water. It is also covered by a 15-year warranty.

Trekker is UV treated for fade resistance so, although it will mellow slightly once installed, the colour will stabilize after just two or three weeks. Scratches may be lightly sanded and the colour will rapidly blend into the remaining deck or cladding.

NB Trekker boards are sold individually, not in packs, and can be machined with standard woodworking tools.

Another wood fibre composite decking board, this one mixed with high-density polyethylene. In this American-made product the wood fibre is ground particularly finely, almost like flour, for a highly uniform appearance. This is coated with the polyethylene and Summit products are then finished with an extremely durable polymer technology. The result is an exceptionally low-maintenance deck (soap and water is all you need) which can withstand even extreme weather conditions for decades.

The Xscape range carries a limited 25-year residential structural warranty whilst the Summit products also enjoy a limited fade- and stain-resistant warranty over the same period. Voyager Grey and Voyager Brown, with their traditional woodgrain pattern, will lighten a little, but their colour will stabilize after two or three months.
